Pyr Story

In February Olivia shared the story of the Pyrenees Dog rescue. We are pleased to follow that up with the happy success story ending for these dogs!
On March 12, 2012, after their final round of vet care, True Blue Animal Rescue sent Delia and Porthos, two Pyrenees rescue dogs, to New Jersey to be placed in forever homes through Eleventh Hour Rescue. In doing this we learned that northern states have done such a great job of eliminating their overpopulation problem that they currently have a shortage of rescue animals. With this demand for rescue animals in the north the southern states are now shipping hundreds there on a regular basis.
We linked up with PETS, LLC., one of the transport companies that brings dogs all over the country to their new homes. We met with this transport team in Houston, TX where there were another 40 dogs loaded into an air conditioned semi truck by compassionate people who were knowledgable about dogs and how to care for them in a transport situation. We were comforted and happy to receive updates and pictures of our dogs during this three day trip. Then when they arrived in New Jersey we were notified and sent pictures to assure us that they made it safely.
Since it means saving more lives we plan to try and place more dogs in homes in states that have less rescue dogs than we do but we also know that this is not the answer to ending our overpopulation problem. Thirty years ago these states had the same overpopulation problems that we see in the south. I worked in an SPCA in New York State and experienced this first hand. Since then They enforced licensing laws, developed spay / neuter programs and educated the public in order to become no kill states. Knowing this gives me the assurance that we can do the same thing here in Texas, and other states who are still working to decrease and then eliminate their euthanasia rates.
TBAR is a 501(c)(3) non-profit no-kill animal rescue organization. If you would like to help animals such as this one please consider donating to TBAR, volunteering, fostering, or adopting. Donations go directly toward care, feed, and veterinary care of the rescued animals and every little bit helps us to help another animal in need of safety and rehabilitation. Save a life: adopt instead of shop and spay or neuter your pets!

kittensAnya, Lila, Lana and Nikolai
Anya, Lila, Lana and Nikolai were dumped on a back road in Anderson, TX and were lucky enough to be found by a TBAR foster home. They lived for one wonderful month in a loving foster home after testing positive for FeLv but not showing symptoms yet. A confirmatory lab test had been sent to New Jersey before they began to show symptoms. Once the symptoms set in, their quality of life went downhill quickly so their foster mom agreed with the vet that it was time to help them cross over the Rainbow Bridge peacefully.

Licorice was seized along with 19 pasture mates when his owner could no longer care for him. Like his pasture mates Licorice, or Proud Pusher, was thin but he also had a severe case of Uveitis or Moon Blindness. This condition caused him pain and the only solution would have been to remove his eyes leaving him completely blind. We decided that was not a quality life for this magnificent horse so we helped him cross the rainbow bridge. We will always remember him in this lush pasture eating to his hearts content before it was time to cross. He is now at peace with his father The Pusher CG

Mini Donkey

This little donkey was one of 19 that were removed from their owner because she could no longer care for them. His little body was all bones and his mother was dried and unable to provide him proper nutrition either. We fed him milk and feed in an attempt to get him to gain weight and recover. In a final attempt to save his life the vet tubed milk into him but he continued to decline and eventually passed away. This picture was taken while he still had the strength to stand and we’ll always remember him enjoying some grass and some peace before he crossed the rainbow bridge.

Horses Adopted in 2011 – 2012

Chicklett

Name: Chicklett

Breed: Paint/Pinto  Gender: Female  Age: Young  Status: Adopted  Description: Paint filly, halter broke, leads, stands tied, loads in trailer..LOVES to be scratched and petted.

Band Aid Band Aid was born to Boo Boo shortly after arriving at her True Blue Animal Rescue foster home in 2010. Now approximately 1 year old, she would love to find a forever home along with her mama. By nature, mini donks are sweet, gentle, playful, and love human attention. They are easy keepers, get along with other animals, and are fun to have around.

Black Fury

WinsBlack Fury is a 3 yr old Welsh/Shetland pony gelding.

Boo BooBoo Boo was rescued along with 15 other mini donkeys when the Sheriff’s department found them wandering the streets. Shortly after arriving at her True Blue Animal Rescue foster home, she gave birth to a baby girl named Band Aid (Spring 2010). By nature, mini donks are sweet, gentle, playful, and love human attention. They are easy keepers, get along with other animals, and are fun to have around. They would love to be adopted together if possible. She is used to being handled and being led with halter or rope.

BuffyBuffy was found estray and when no owner came forward she was awarded to T-Bar. Buffy is a young horse who is halter-broke and aready to train.

Dream CatcherWhen Dreamcatcher first came to TBAR he was so skinny his knees wobbled.  Currently, DreamCatcher’s foster home reports that he has put on ALOT of weight, and that his top line has filled out nicely. He has a bit of a “hay belly” and no chest or butt yet, but nothing a little more exercise can’t cure. He leads well, is good for the farrier, and is doing well lunging in the round pen. He also enjoys a good bath, and loves attention. We haven’t tied him yet, we realized today, but we will try it out. He is still a little wary around strangers at first, but warms up quickly. We plan to pony him a little this weekend, see how he does with a group, in a new setting and how his feet hold up. They appear to be good and hard, but his heels were short and are growing out now.

GypsieGypsy was an estray and when no owner claimed her, she was awarded to TBAR. She is now healthy and ready for adoption. Gypsy was ridden previously and just needs a refresher.

HemmingwayHemmingway was wandering estray in a neighborhood and was extremely skinny. The authorities looked for an owner and when no one came forth to claim him, TBAR was awarded Hemmingway.  This older, 25 yr old horse is skin and bones but has already put on weight in his short time with TBar.  Slowly and surely, Hemmingway will be restored to full health.  His long white mane goes down to his shoulder and he has a wonderful, engaging personality. He loves cookies!

SteveSteve was seized as a 4 year old stallion in late 2006 – at the time he was wild and untouched.  At his first (and only) foster home he was gentled, castrated, and put into ground-work training – a couple months later he was started under saddle at a Ray Hunt clinic, and went on to be a great versatile trail mount, winning 2 competitive trail competitions in 2007.  The rider went on to interests outside of trail riding with other horses, and Steve has basically been turned out on pasture for the past 3 years. He has excellent ground manners, wonderful feet (never worn shoes), is an exceptionally “easy keeper” (never fed grain, and always fat) – he has a stocky build, very correct conformation, and good bones – he has never had a lameness issue and held up to heavy daily riding.   He is a fast learner and quick to please. The next home for Steve requires a handler/rider that is smart, consistent, and capable.

Stormy

Storm was born a few months after his Mom was rescued from a starvation situation along with 26 other horses. Little Storm is available for adoption along with his mom.

Color:  Sorrel
Breed:  Arabian
Registered Association: yes Reg #:
Abilities: Broke to ride
ADOPTED – Thank you! Location:
Description: Sirius and Cara are companions who have been together for 10 years and would like to be adopted together. These horses are great to be around.  Both are gentle and would make good pets for young children.  Both are broke and it would seem that they have been seriously ridden in their earlier years because of the bridle marks across the nose of each.  These horses are not pushy and tend to stay out of troubles way — like from larger horses.  They have been ridden recently are not subject to bucking or acting up.  Really, they are very sweet – probably Sirius is more apt to come to you before Cara but both are right there wanting attention.  Would trust them with children.   They stand very still for the farrier.

Geronimo2 Geronimo has been ridden in the past, but has been out to pasture for awhile, so will need a refresher course. He requires an intermediate to experienced rider. At his current foster home he is in a herd of miniature horses and donkeys and gets along fine with them. He in fact acts like the daddy. He will wait to be put up until he is sure that all the little ones are snug and warm in their beds for the night. He has good ground manners, but you might have to remind him to pay attention to you. When he is in a new situation, he likes to look around before you can get his attention. He is laid back under halter, easy to catch if you do not show him the halter but run your hand up his neck with the rope. Once you put the rope around his neck, he will lower his head for the halter.  Once he has been retrained or refreshed, he will make a great trail horse or anything his adopter would like to do with him. He is stocky, agile and beautiful. Showing the grace of his breed Granny 3-13-10   Granny, Sassy and the donkey Tonto were rescued together. Granny was extremely emaciated and was still nursing her 3 year old baby, Sassy. Granny is now healthy and at her ideal weight. She is ready for adoption.   Izzy   Izzy was a Texas A & M polo pony. She fractured her cannon bone and although she is healed and isn’t lame, she cannot be used for polo anymore. She’d make a great kids lead line or walk only horse. She’s well trained and very sweet. You can tell from her body that this poor girl has seen better times, but that hasn’t diminished her loving attitude and fun-loving spirit. Katie had a wonderful retirement and lots of love in her golden years. In the end, she was held in loving arms and peacefully crossed over.

BrookeJul07Web Brooke had a bright future. A young, foundation quarter horse filly, with beautiful sorrel coloring; part of a herd of mares and watched over by several stallions – she had her  whole life ahead of her. But then the nightmare began. The grass was gone, the grain was gone, the hay was gone – for a long time. Brooke watched sadly as some of her fellow horses and cows died from lack of food. Only the strongest would survive. The old and the young were the most at risk; and she was one of them. One day, several people with badges came and brought food. It felt good to have a full belly again, even though it would be a long road for Brooke’s  body to look healthy again. With the help of a lot caring people – some with badges, some who rescue horses – Brooke  came to True Blue Animal Rescue. Now, at only 2.5-3 years old, Brooke has a bright future again. She’s halter broke, willing to trust, and ready to start under saddle. She would make a beautiful addition to your stable. buster2006

She and 3 other horses shared a small pasture in the country that had long since run out of grass. Water was scarce, and there was no cover from the winter weather. When the owner did bring some food, Rosey and the 2 other horses let the baby horse eat first. Then the older boy horse, Chief, let the two girls – Rosey and Duchess – eat next; but it showed. He was skin and bones. Thankfully, the authorities seized Rosey and the other horses; and the court awarded them to True Blue Animal Rescue where they could be rehabilitated. Rosey is halter-broke, has fabulous ground manners and is probably rideable. A beautiful, 10 year old strawberry roan, Rosey is healthy again and ready for a loving, forever home.

Tuscany
We gave him everything we had: food, love, veterinary care, and prayers;  but in the end, we couldn’t save Tuscany from severe starvation.

Thursday, July 24th – TBAR (Melanie and Dale) went out to meet the vet and check out this horse  after a lady called TBAR and told us he was losing weight and she couldn’t afford to feed him anymore. TBAR ended up making an emergency decision and taking Tuscany into our rescue on the spot. He is beyond skinny. He is a walking skeleton. He is a 0.5 on the Henneke Body Scoring.  We named him Tuscany. We named him that because we know he will live up to the name when he fills out and becomes the beautiful horse he once was. He’s in his early 20’s which means he is not extremely old for a horse. Today horses live well into their 30’s. There is no reason for this guy to be this thin except that he didn’t have enough food.

When Dale and I went out to see him after a phone call from the owner telling us that she can’t afford to feed him and begging us to take him we were stunned by what we saw. There was some poor quality grain but no hay for this guy to eat but his eyes were bright and he looked at us with hope. Enough said, so we went back and picked up the trailer and took him home. He’s eating senior feed four times a day with plenty of hay so we expect him to come around and start gaining weight quickly.

August 13th – Sadly, Tuscany lost his battle to recover from severe starvation; and passed away this morning, unable to rise. In the end, he was ready to go and we helped him cross over. Our hearts are broken, not being able to save this magnificent Soul. He is not suffering any more.

THANK YOU to all Tuscany’s supporters!!

For the last 3 weeks, Tuscany knew love and care from humans. He was honored as the brave, courageous Spirit that he was. And had plenty of food (in small, frequent quantities), shelter, warmth and tender loving care. Please light a candle for Tuscany. Say hello to Chief, Toot, Chai and the other TBar horses in heaven, Tuscany.  Tell them we miss them and look forward to seeing them again some day.

Naimi was just a weanling when she came to TBAR, and has grown up into a beautiful, bay two year old mare with flashy white markings. Typical of mustangs, she is small and will grow to be about 14 hands. Naimi is willing to please; and very people friendly.
