Another one of our Animals Bridge Love and Educations (ABLE) days was Family fun day on Nov 1st. The kids enjoyed horse rides, a hay ride and feeding and petting animals. Nothing brings us more joy than sharing our rescue animals with children. This opportunity for a family to come out and enjoy a few hours at Tbar Ranch is one of our favorites! Kids Who Read Get To Ride a Horse!
TBAR is proud of the advances our Animals Bridge Love and Education (ABLE) program. Each season we offer incentives for children to earn an animal experience through reading their choice of books. This October we hosted students from Alton Elementary (in Brenham, Texas) who read 30 picture books or 50 pages of a chapter book while they were on summer break.
In total, seventeen students met the challenge requirements by handing in their list of books, endorsed by their parents. They were all so exited to embark on their special reward: a field trip to the home of one a TBAR foster family (and a teacher at Alton), Melanie!
Melanie and her husband Dale work hard to organize these trip and ensure there are plenty of TBAR volunteers on hand to help the students meet and pet the animals while learning about care and compassion for the animals. The kids got to tour the ranch, feed animals, ride a horse, and go on a hayride!
TBAR will continue to support the ABLE program and spread love and compassion for animals throughout Washington County and beyond. Thank you to the parents and teachers who support the program, and the TBAR volunteers that make it possible!

Event: Oktoberfest
Today TBAR volunteers will be out at Oktoberfest in Burton! Come out and enjoy the fun!
Event Announcement: Octoberfest Burton
Just announced! TBAR will be at the Second Annual “Oktoberfest Burton”, hosted by the Burton Area Chamber of Commerce on Saturday, October 11, 2014.
This event is the Chamber’s main fundraiser for the year. Funds raised will benefit current projects aimed at the civic, economic, industrial, agricultural, educational, tourist and general welfare interests of our community. A portion of the entry fee for the Weenie Dog Races will be donated to True Blue Animal Rescue.
Gates will open at 3:00pm with a $5 gate admission. The Event will kick off with the Burton Cub Scouts Flag Raising Ceremony, followed by the Ceremonial Tapping of the Keg. Live German music and celebratory German Singing will conclude the opening ceremonies. The Running of the Wieners (Dog Race) will begin at 4:00p.m. Ladies Stein Races will start at 5:00p.m. and Beer Barrel Races will start at 6:00p.m. At 7:00p.m.,visitors can participate in Burton’s Biggest Chicken Dance. The LIVE AUCTION starts at 7:30p.m. Local and German Vendors will be selling their wares and fun and games will be available for the kiddos. Dress up in Lederhosen or Dirndl to enter the “Best Dressed German Lady and Man Contest”.
The John Holub Polka band will play under the big top from 3:00p.m.to7:00p.m. and Slim Bawb and the Stump Grinders will follow and play until 10:00 p.m.
Enjoy Authentic German Food & Ice Cold Brews while you polka through the night. We hope to see you there!
Kids Camp: Five Oaks Visit 2014
True Blue Animal Rescue had the pleasure of hosting the Five Oaks Achievement Center on August 13th and August the 15. From nine am until noon the kids that came out were treated to a number of fun T-bar events. The day started with the introductions to the horses they would be working with along with the many rules about how to behave around a horse. Melanie DeAeth, founder and president of True Blue Animal Rescue made sure the boys and girls that came out got hands on experience working with the animals.
Not only did the horses get one on one attention but so did the kids that came out. Thanks to our wonderful volunteers each student also had a teacher for the day. While one group went off for a nice hay ride around the T-bar ranch the next group was assigned a horse and a volunteer. First they were taught how to groom a horse and the proper brushes to use on what part of a horse’s body. Next was the even tougher lesson of putting on a saddle! That one was a little more involved!
Next the kids got to walk their horse to the round pen to learn very basic ground work skills. Melanie directed the group with first putting on a rope halter, then making sure the horses were okay with the lead line moving near the horse. Also known as desensitization. While doing these skills the teens came out of their shells and had fun asking questions about their horses and even about life.
Once round pen work was over the group then were asked to lead their horses to the True Blue Animal Rescue riding arena. There, with their special volunteer for the day, the kids were able to pick out a riding helmet and then be led around the arena for riding. A few of the kids were not certain they wanted to ride but with a little cheering on everyone gave it a try! By the end of the day all the teens that came out were cowboys or cowgirls. After the riding the volunteers demonstrated how to take a saddle off a horse the proper way and store it. Next the kids rubbed down the horses and all too soon they had to say good-bye.

Event Recap: Horseman Market Days 2014
Equestrian Market Day was successful for another year. This event was held at the Brazos County Expo and sponsored by The Brazos Valley Driving and Riding Club. It’s a great opportunity for horse enthusiasts to buy things for their equine hobby at bargain prices. Even though it was hot, humid, dusty and a lot of work, at the end of the day, we want to do it again. For Tbar it’s a great opportunity to make money to help the animals. Thanks to the many wonderful people who donated horsey items for us to sell, we did just that. Lots of people stopped by to say hi and to browse through everything Tbar had displayed to sell and to learn more about rescue. This type of exposure is very important for the public as well as a learning experience for our volunteers. Thank you to all who braved the heat and worked hard to make this event a great success. The following pictures show a great turnout both from Tbar and the public. It is events like this that take lots of work and dedication from our volunteers, as well as officers and staff.
Upcoming Event: TBAR Open House August 30
Have you ever wanted to meet some Texas animal rescue pets while talking to volunteers about the rescue? Now is your chance! On August 30, 2014 one of our TBAR foster homes will be hosting an open house. Come out and meet ABLE camp horses and visit with some TBAR dogs. We will have our T-shirts and cookbooks for sale, and a few refreshments as well. Kids are welcome to tour as well. Carnival at the Dog Park 2014
Animal Friends of Washington County presents Carnival at the Dog Park this coming Saturday (June 7th) from 10AM-3PM.
Come out for some great demonstrations and exhibits, including: Brenham K9 Police (see narcotic dogs in action!), Miracle Farms, Texas Reptile & Hospice Sanctuary, Brenham Humane Society, Faske Longhorns (photo-ops), Kids Bounce House, quick-draw portrait of your and your pet, AND – TBAR!
The TBAR booth will be featuring: Info booth and adoptable dogs, kid’s games, hoppy pony races, face painting, and dog agility training demos and experience.
Animal Friends will be serving free food (hotdogs!) and drinks from 11am-2pm and door prizes!
Pets are welcome (on leash), costumes are optional, and there is a pet parade at noon.

TBAR would like to remind everyone that this will be a fun event for the whole family, but please be aware of your dog and the dogs of others. Dogs that are comfortable in their own home may not be as comfortable in a new situation or they may get overstimulated. Pay attention to your furry friend’s body language to avoid any surprises. Also ,watch out for dogs that may have gotten away from their owners and if you see one, pick up your dog or get them on a short leash quickly (dogs on leash sometimes seriously dislike being approached by a dog off-leash). If you see a dog get away from their owner you can help them by squatting down, calling in a happy voice, and/or showing a treat to get their attention. Never chase a loose dog in a crowd!

First Annual Lifetime Membership Appreciation Meeting
This year True Blue Animal had it’s first annual Lifetime membership appreciation meeting. We wanted to give those members that have made lifetime contributions a chance to come out, meet the animals and find out how their donation is being used. Our TBAR volunteer staff and officers brought snacks and were all there to talk about what we are doing to help control pet population, stop abuse and neglect and find homes for our wonderful foster animals. Everyone loved hearing about the new training program and Trainer Juan Vendrell of TC Ranch Ventures was there to talk about how he’s been helping the horses to become more adoptable. We also talked about our summer ‘Read to Ride Camp’ and what that will mean to the children in our community.
In addition to just talking and sharing information they were able to go out and meet the animals. Zelda, the zorse, enjoyed the visitors and getting some extra attention and treats! The other horses were happy to partake in eating the carrots that the members brought and getting some extra pets and attention.
Lifetime members have donated $500 or more to True Blue Animal Rescue. These donations help us continue to take in rehabilitate and find new homes for animals. We were happy to be able to show our appreciation to our lifetime members and plan to make this an annual event. I hope to see everyone back again next year and more!
