Foster Feature: Grayheart

This week we have another post from Linda and James Taylor!

Last weekend we transported another mare, Grayheart, to her new adopted home. We had Grayheart for two years as she grew from a young foal into a beautiful, confident mare.

Yes, fostering is an emotional job. The hardest part about fostering is letting go…letting them move on to the next leg of that animals journey in life.

As you say goodbye , there are always tears. Each tear contains an equal mixture of joy and sorrow. But in the end, there is this deep feeling of satisfaction that you have done something good… something that matters .

And then, you turn toward the next animal, the next story, the next special one in need of a resting place ….in need of a foster.

Success Stories: Lucy

Found in Bellville, TX with a serious case of demodex mange, you would never believe that the dog in the picture above is the same dog in the “before” picture below. We can only imagine what kind of life this sweet girl experienced before coming to True Blue Animal Rescue and she was very lucky to be given a chance by a wonderful foster family.

Lucy was rescued and brought to TBAR to receive the medical care she desperately needed to become healthy again. After months of rehab, Lucy’s foster family decided she had become an important part of their family and that she belonged with them forever. Lucy will always have a lifelong battle of skin issues, but she now has a family who is happy to do and provide what is necessary to make her as comfortable as possible.

True Blue Animal Rescue wants to thank Lucy’s family for stepping up and giving her a chance at a wonderful life. Animal rescues are nothing without foster families who are willing to open their home to an animal with an unknown past and accept whatever challenges he or she may face.

RAIN Success: Echo!

RAIN Success: Because of the networking efforts of our community on the RAIN page, we were able to help this Catahoula find a great loving home before being taken to a shelter. Her new family has named her Echo and they are all in love!

From Stacey (her adopter):

Oh my goodness… She is absolutely a dream. She’s soooo good. Knows how to play fetch and brings the ball right back! She’s actually pretty calm for a puppy, we are so impressed and grateful to have her as a part of our family. She’s happy and very loving and fits right in. She likes to gather her toys and keep them surrounding her bed but drags this little fox we got her around in her mouth wherever she goes, so adorable. We have given her a name that seems to fit her, she even answers to it already! “Echo” is her name! I totally believe she was meant to find us, and I’m thankful everything happened the way it did.

She is so smart she even figured out how the iphone works to take her first “selfie” hahaha here she is with my daughter… They are inseparable. 🙂

Rescue Animals In Need (RAIN) is a referral animal networking group run by volunteers of True Blue Animal Rescue for animals in the community who have been rescued and are now looking for a forever home.

True Blue Animal Rescue gets more calls, emails and Facebook requests to take more animals than we can help. The RAIN Facebook page was created as a way to network those animals to the public in search of foster or forever homes.

Success Stories: Winston

This handsome little guy was lucky enough to be born a few short days after his mother was rescued off a Houston street by a very kind woman who came to TBAR asking for help. Winston’s mother, Gracie, was much too young to give birth, but here we were with 4 healthy kittens.

Winston was the last of the kittens who found their home. He had to be fostered for a little longer for extra medical attention. Winston had to receive treatment for ringworm before he could be adopted out and spent some time being boarded at a Houston vet office where one of his foster parents worked. He quickly became a favorite of those who worked in the vet office because he was so loving and an awesome little guy (handsome too!). Soon enough it was Winston’s turn to find his forever home.

Winston went to his new forever family on February 9, 2014 and – as you can tell – he found himself right at home. We are happy to see him finally find a loving home and want to thank his foster, Linda, for her patience and determination for finding these babies homes.

Success Stories: Shawnee

This week’s Success Story is all about Shawnee!

Horses like Shawnee don’t come along every day. She is a rare and beautiful snow-flake red roan Appaloosa with four white stockings. Like so many of T-Bar’s adoptable horses, Shawnee was taken from her owner due to abuse and neglect and was very skinny when she was taken in by T-Bar. She was placed in a wonderful T-Bar foster home where she received the nutrition, attention and TLC needed to rehabilitate her into the the loving lady she has become.

Shawnee, now named Pinky, was understandably a bit shy and nervous in her new foster home. But with some time and patience, she began to trust again. She remembered round pen work and tried very hard to please her foster. With T-Bar’s foster-to-adopt equine fostering option, Karlene was able to spend some time working one on one with Pinky making sure that they were the perfect match before making her commitment to adoption. After spending some time getting to know and work with this gorgeous girl, Karlene decided it was time to make Pinky a permanent part of her family.

Hi T-bar folks. Just wanted to say thank you for the privilege you have granted me by permitting me to give your Shawnee her forever home. She is a sweet little mare and as you can see we are enjoying our ground lessons very much. We look forward to seeing you all on the trail someday soon.

Success Stories: Scooter

Meet T-Bar’s Scooter

Last week, we listed Luna as our Success Story of the week. This week, we have the privilege of posting Luna’s brother Scooter as our Success Story!

Scooter was abandoned on the side of the road with Prissy (aka Munchkin) and her sister Luna (PeeWee). This little group of dumped dogs remained where they were – thinking their owner would be back for them and would take them home again. Instead, these three were lucky enough to be spotted by a T-Bar foster who stopped to see if they could be coerced into a crate. Scooter and the girls were very shy and nervous at first, but after a little time and patience, they warmed up to be loving little lap dogs who would do anything for pets and attention.

Here’s what his adoptive mom has to say about him:

“He is great. He loves the babies, my son is connected at his hip. He slept with us in our bed all night long…yes we allow animals in our bed. 🙂 He is great with our other dog and the cat and him don’t really care that each other exist…no issues and very happy momma!!!”

Pyr Story

In February Olivia shared the story of the Pyrenees Dog rescue. We are pleased to follow that up with the happy success story ending for these dogs!

On March 12, 2012, after their final round of vet care, True Blue Animal Rescue sent Delia and Porthos, two Pyrenees rescue dogs, to New Jersey to be placed in forever homes through Eleventh Hour Rescue. In doing this we learned that northern states have done such a great job of eliminating their overpopulation problem that they currently have a shortage of rescue animals. With this demand for rescue animals in the north the southern states are now shipping hundreds there on a regular basis.

We linked up with PETS, LLC., one of the transport companies that brings dogs all over the country to their new homes. We met with this transport team in Houston, TX where there were another 40 dogs loaded into an air conditioned semi truck by compassionate people who were knowledgable about dogs and how to care for them in a transport situation. We were comforted and happy to receive updates and pictures of our dogs during this three day trip. Then when they arrived in New Jersey we were notified and sent pictures to assure us that they made it safely.

Since it means saving more lives we plan to try and place more dogs in homes in states that have less rescue dogs than we do but we also know that this is not the answer to ending our overpopulation problem. Thirty years ago these states had the same overpopulation problems that we see in the south. I worked in an SPCA in New York State and experienced this first hand. Since then They enforced licensing laws, developed spay / neuter programs and educated the public in order to become no kill states. Knowing this gives me the assurance that we can do the same thing here in Texas, and other states who are still working to decrease and then eliminate their euthanasia rates.

Success Stories: Luna (aka Pee Wee)

This little girl was abandoned on the side of the road with her sister, Munchkin, and another small black dog named Scooter. This little group of dumped dogs remained where they were – thinking their owner would be back for them and would take them home again.

Instead, these three were lucky to be spotted by a T-Bar foster who stopped to see if they could be coerced into a crate. Pee Wee, now named Luna, was very timid, but had nowhere to go, so she let the kind soul who found her come near. Even though she didn’t want to be picked up, this hungry little girl and her companions couldn’t resist the canned dog food they were offered, and they ran into a crate when they smelled it. Luna, Munchkin and Scooter were then brought to T-Bar to get the vetting and care that they needed. Luna was spayed, vaccinated, de-wormed and began her search for her forever family.

With a face as cute as Luna’s, it didn’t take long for a family to fall head-over-heels for this sweet girl. After filling out their adoption application, the Allen family got to meet Luna and decided they could not let her go. Now our little Luna has a wonderful forever family and two other fur-kids, Ike and Tucker, to play with and love!

Success Stories: Smokey

Nearly everyday, T-Bar receives emails from the caring people who have found, fed and sheltered an animal that appears to have been dumped and left to fend for themselves, but who are unable to keep the animal. Sometimes we are able to take in one or two of these animals when there is an open space in a foster home, but when T-Bar foster homes are full we reluctantly have to tell these compassionate people that we have nowhere to place the animal and we are only able to offer networking assistance through our RAIN (Rescue Animals In Need) Facebook page.

Animals who are born and grow up feral are better able to care for themselves than a domesticated animal whose had their food, water and shelter provided for them their whole lives. For Smokey, he was one of the lucky ones spotted on a porch bench at a Mexican restaurant in Somerville, Texas by one of T-Bar’s wonderful foster parents. When she walked up to him, he physically reached out to her as if he were asking, “Can you please help me?” After discovering that he was dumped, there was no possibility that she could leave him there on his own.

At that point, Smokey was only 6 months old and needed lots of food and TLC. At first, he was very anxious about his new surroundings and the woman who was caring for him. Sometimes he would be so scared he thought he had to defend himself and hide. But after a few weeks of being slowly socialized and shown love, he learned to trust this kind stranger.

For months, he waited and waited for his forever family to find him. Thanks to a Pet of the Week listing in the Brenham Banner Press, Smokey’s forever family had finally found him. When it was time for his Meet-n-Greet, Smokey did his best to charm them and show them that he was a very special boy. His new mom, Emilee, fell in love with him that day. She knew he was the right fit for her and began preparing her home for his arrival. It did not take long for Emilee and Smokey to bond. He is so happy to finally have his own girl to love him and spend the rest of his life with.

Thank you, Emilee and Jan, for opening your hearts and home to our sweet Smokey.

Success Stories: Jewel

Jewel, aka Ebony, was born on September 12, 2013, along with her siblings: Winston, Buffy, and Piper. Jewel’s mother, Gracie, gave birth to the litter of 4 shortly after being rescued off the streets by a very kind soul. Jewel spent a few months growing and learning how to be a great little kitty with her foster mom, but she found her perfect forever home with her new fur-sibling, Jack.

Thank you to the Molder family for giving Jewel a loving home and spoiling her like she deserves!
